Supermarket Heist
Writing, performing, and recording "Crush"
Our new single, “Crush,” was written in May 2021 after talking to our closest friend, Danny Shipp, about apples in the supermarket. We had finished a month-long Full Time Smile tour to the west coast and back in September, and we were about to go out for another month-er with Lunar Vacation and The Slaps. At the time, we didn’t do too well with having to play the same batch of songs over and over again, and we were always pining for new tunes to bring on tour, even though our record had come out just a few months prior.
Johnny brought “Crush” to the table, George brought “Neighbors,” and Noah brought “What’s Enough.” We performed these new songs alongside tunes from Full Time Smile, Friends, and Silverdays.
It didn’t take long for these songs to feel like they belonged to Future Crib, with “Crush” going through the most shaping and re-shaping. It’s a song with only a few chords, and can be played many different ways.
The lyrics focus on how money gets in the way of meaningful personal relationships, as well as one’s relationship with the natural world. One’s judgement in pursuit of “success” is often clouded as they climb the food chain, at the sacrifice of those they love. Before long they’ve lost themselves. It’s a shame to let our love be crushed under the weight of all that evil.
“Crush,” “Neighbors,” and “What’s Enough” were to be recorded together for a 7 inch, but when Noah decided to step away from the band in August 2022, that project was doused. “Crush” and “Neighbors” remained in the live set throughout 2023, and after several attempts at recording the song, the final version was accomplished in October 2023. Attached here are a few versions on the way to the “final” recording.
