We’re trying to make the most of our new releases by creating moving pictures to go along with them. While the music making is really what we love, live, and breath, challenging ourselves to make these videos has been refreshing. Joni Mitchell talked of “crop-rotation” in regards to different art forms; if she was burnt out on making records, she would draw and paint. Eventually that practice would inspire more music making, and she could return to that crop with fresh soil. We’ve all been watching lots of movies as we age into our twenties, and doing research to pull back the curtain on how certain scenes were accomplished or dreamt up has led us to new paths of creativity.
For the “Crush” video, a loose story was drawn up, followed later by some slightly more detailed storyboards and shot lists. The mask was paper mache - a bigass balloon covered in paper, flour, and water. Mostly old charts and random notes from legal pads.
After popping the balloon and lightly sanding, the facial features were added with more paper, cardboard, and Mod Podge.
The paint went on after the eyes were cut out and mesh added. Shoulder straps were installed for stability so the actor could move around freely (Julia is in the suit for most of the video; Caleb Boese is in the suit on the roof).
Danny Shipp, band best friend, tour manager, and visual collaborator (featured above), shot and edited the video. We appreciate Danny so much - he fills our hearts with joy.
We’re so excited to have this song out in the world. It can go on having great adventures of its own, as we did when we were making it. Thanks eternally for putting yr ears and eyes on our hard work! We hope it brings something unique in your life.
